Application of Bergmann's Rule in the Morphological Traits of Eothenomys miletus from Five Areas of Yunnan Province

Abstract:To investigate whether the morphological traits of Eothenomys miletus were accordant with the Bergmann's rule of different geographical environments in Yunnan Province, E. miletus were collected from Deqin, Xianggelila, Lijiang, Jianchuan and Ailaoshan, respectively. Bivariate correlation, linear regression and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the correlation among body length, tail length, and other morphological indices and latitude, altitude and annual average temperature. The results showed that body mass, body length, cranial length, cranial base length, tail length, ear length, ear width, fore limb length and hind limb length of E. miletus in different areas from Yunnan Province were all significantly correlated with latitude, altitude and annual average temperature. Specifically, these traits were negatively correlated with latitude and altitude, but positively correlated with annual average temperature. This study suggests that the morphological traits like body size and skull of E. miletus dose not obey the Bergmann's rule, but the projection of the body are accordant with the Allen's rule.
